چکیده

Recently, the argument has been made that receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis should be used to compare the diagnostic performance of different lineup procedures. However, a drawback to ROC analysis is that is requires multiple correct and false ID rates for each lineup procedure being compared. When only a single pair of correct and false ID rates is measured, what dependent measure should be used? Here, we contrast the use of d' with the diagnosticity ratio using the data reported by Carlson and Carlson (in press) and other previously reported data. Despite being based on a theory that was developed for list memory procedures, we show that, in practice, d' performs surprisingly well for lineup procedures. Moreover, d' far outperforms the diagnosticity ratio. We recommend that d' – not the diagnosticity ratio – be used as a dependent measure to compare the diagnostic performance of different lineup procedures.

The Diagnosticity of a Lineup Should Not Be Confused With the Diagnostic Wue of Nonlineup Evidence

We argue that a lineup is diagnostic to the extent that it reveals information from recognition memory that was not available from the eyewitness^ recall memory Accordingly, lineup diagnosticity is denned as the probability that an innocent suspect is identified by the witness when lineup members resemble the eyewitness's prelineup description. Navon (1990) argued that this definition underesti...

Running head: ROC ANALYSIS OF EYEWITNESS MEMORY 1 Receiver Operating Characteristic Analysis of Eyewitness Memory: Comparing the Diagnostic Accuracy of Simultaneous vs. Sequential Lineups

A police lineup presents a real-world signal-detection problem because there are two possible states of the world (the suspect is either innocent or guilty), some degree of information about the true state of the world is available (the eyewitness has some degree of memory for the perpetrator), and a decision is made (identifying the suspect or not). A similar state of affairs applies to diagno...

SEVENTY-TWO TESTS OF THE SEQUENTIAL LINEUP SUPERIORITY EFFECT: A Meta-Analysis and Policy Discussion

A decade ago, a meta-analysis showed that identification of a suspect from a sequential lineup versus a simultaneous lineup was more diagnostic of guilt (Steblay, Dysart, Fulero, & Lindsay, 2001). Since then, controversy and debate regarding sequential superiority has emerged. We report the results of a new meta-analysis involving 72 tests of simultaneous and sequential lineups from 23 differen...
